Recruitment and Retention Toolkit
In partnership with West Midlands Teaching School Hubs
Introduction
The UK faces significant challenges in attracting and keeping talented educators. Now more than ever, the recruitment and retention of dedicated teachers is key to ensuring the success and future of the children and young people in our care.
By implementing recruitment strategies and providing ongoing professional development, we can support teachers in their careers and attract new teachers to the profession. In partnership with other West Midlands Teaching School Hubs, we are proud to have developed a Recruitment and Retention Toolkit to support schools with this mission, and plan on sharing practical elements of the kit with you in short, accessible communications. We hope that our commitment to recruitment and retention can extend across the WM4 region through engagement and support from our schools.
You can find the full Toolkit here:
Part 1 – Infographics
We have designed a range of infographics to attract new teachers to the profession.
These graphics can be included in newsletters, shared on social media, added to your website, printed and put up in your school, or added to emails and regular communications.

Research tells us that schools are well placed to support recruitment. Through outreach to their communities, schools have found that there are often parents looking for a change in career, or current school staff who would make excellent teachers. We ask that schools adapt, use and distribute our Toolkit resources to promote the teaching profession. We are more than happy to provide advice and bespoke support on request, and will be in touch with further Toolkit resources in the coming weeks.
Part 2 – Case Studies
Career changer case studies are a powerful tool for encouraging recruitment into the teaching profession. We’ve compiled a selection of inspiring case studies that you can share within your communities to attract new teachers.
Here’s how these case studies can benefit your recruitment efforts:
Inspiration and Motivation
Case studies showcase real-life examples of individuals who successfully transitioned into teaching from other professions. These stories can inspire potential candidates by demonstrating that a career change is possible.
Highlighting Transferable Skills
They emphasize the valuable skills and experiences that career changers bring to the classroom.
Addressing Concerns
Case studies can address common concerns and fears about changing careers, such as financial stability, job satisfaction, and the challenges of adapting to a new profession.
Showcasing Support Systems
They can highlight the support and training available for career changers, such as mentoring programs, professional development opportunities, and tailored training courses.
Creating Relatability
By featuring diverse backgrounds and experiences, case studies can resonate with a wide range of individuals, making the teaching profession more accessible and appealing to those who might not have previously considered it.

Research indicates that schools play a crucial role in supporting recruitment efforts.
By engaging with their communities, schools often discover that parents seeking a career change or current staff members could become excellent teachers. We encourage schools to adapt, utilize, and distribute our Toolkit resources to promote the teaching profession. We are more than happy to offer advice and bespoke support upon request.
Part 4 – Engaging Your Parent Community
As part of our ongoing efforts to support teacher recruitment and retention, we are excited to introduce a new addition to our toolkit: Letters Home to Parents. These communications aim to reach members of your school communities who may be considering a career change into teaching.
Why Should Schools Target Their Parent Communities?
We often find that parents may be looking for a career that fits in with their family life – teaching may appeal to them due to career stability, work flexibility, and school holidays! Career changers are also searching for fulfilling and impactful careers, and teaching offers a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students. By engaging parents through thoughtful and informative letters, we can:
- Inspire Potential Career Changers: Highlight the rewarding aspects of a teaching career and the positive impact teachers have on students’ lives.
- Address Common Concerns: Provide reassurance about job stability, career satisfaction, and the support available for new teachers.
- Showcase Success Stories: Share inspiring stories of individuals who have successfully transitioned into teaching from other professions.
- Promote Support Systems: Inform parents about the various support mechanisms in place for career changers, including mentoring programs, professional development opportunities, and tailored training courses.
Sample Parent Communication
Please find below a sample letter that you can customise and distribute to parents within your school community. Additionally, you may consider adapting these letters for newsletters, your school website/ social media platforms, or for parent-teacher meetings to maximize their impact.
