ITT Delivery
Our current cohort of trainees have now completed broader school experiences, gaining valuable insights into the brilliant work done by so many schools, specialist providers and all staff within them in supporting children and young people in so many different ways. It is fantastic to have such a range of expertise in the region - if this is something you would like to find out more about or become involved with in the future, we would love to hear from you:

ITT Recruitment
There has been a lot of media coverage about recruitment into teaching recently which can make us lose sight of what a wonderfully rewarding profession this is. We are on a mission to make sure this message is also shared, and to explore different ways we can enable a wide range of people with so much to offer a pathway into the classrooms. We have a number of upcoming information events and 'taste of teaching tours' coming up over the next few weeks. Further information about these can be found here:
https://teachingschool.tgacademy.org.uk/news-events/scitt/

Our next online information event is on Tuesday 16 April, starting at 5.30pm and running until 6.30pm - anybody interested can register for this directly here:

We are also running a specific online information event for anybody working in a support/voluntary capacity in schools who wants to find out more about training to be a teacher. This event will be on Wednesday 17 April starting at 4.00pm and finishing at 5.00pm - please forward this registration link to any staff who may be interested:

As always, for any general enquiries about teacher training, please contact us using the usual channels or by using this link: https://forms.office.com/e/2g0icdHgmj

 Head Teacher Advocate: Helen Dunnico

During the Spring Term I was able to meet with many HT groups to share information about the changes to ITT that are coming into effect this September.  The biggest implication for schools is around mentoring.

Here are some key points that you need to know:

  • Every ITT provider is required to plan and deliver a bespoke evidence-based structured mentor training programme.
  • The training should take up to 20 hours.
  • All school-based mentors are required to engage with the training.
  • Across the West Midlands, ITT providers have worked collaboratively to plan the first 7 hours of training (Tier 1) which covers the generic principals of mentoring.  This means the Tier 1 training can be transferred across these providers and will not have to be repeated if schools are hosting trainees from more than one provider. (See the list below)
  • The remainder of the training programme is specific to the course trainees are following, so there is the potential for mentors to need to engage with at least part of more than one course if schools are working with multiple providers.
  • Some training can be pre-accredited, if, for example, a mentor has completed the ECF mentor training, or they have undertaken NPQLTD.  However, each ITT provider needs to ensure that mentors have covered all aspects of the mentor curriculum.
  • There is additional funding available for 2024-25 to support schools to release staff for mentor training.  This is up to £876 and is paid retrospectively.  We do not know if this will be available beyond next academic year.

ITT Providers who have accredited Tier 1 training
Arthur Terry SCITT Barr Beacon SCITT Birmingham City University Bishop Challoner Training School
Birmingham Newman University Haybridge Alliance SCITT Keele and North Staffordshire Teacher Education King Edward’s Consortium
Stourport SCITT South Birmingham SCITT St. Joseph’s College SCITT Staffordshire University
John Taylor SCITT University of Warwick University of Wolverhampton University of Worcester
