Message from the Director of TSH, Emma Hatton:

Dear all,

Welcome to your first Tudor Grange Teaching School Hub newsletter of the new academic year! We are well entrenched into the term now, aren't we? The weather has definitely taken a turn!

This newsletter comes with all the optimism and promise that a new school year brings. In Teaching School Hub, we have our own CPD programme and some of the things that we have been thinking carefully about will resonate with many of you, especially those of you who have engaged in an NPQ. We have been thinking about professional culture and environment and the work of Kraft and Papay has been important to us in that. We have also been looking at how we can further embed Robinson's 'ladder of inference' into our work, to help with strategic planning. This short clip explores it well https://youtu.be/Ak-MP_0UVEw

At the start of the year, we are delighted to be able to announce an important development in how Tudor Grange Teaching School Hub can best serve all of our schools.

We are proudly working with Shires MAT in the leadership and delivery of our NPQ suite. Teacher Development Trust continues to be our Lead Provider, and we continue to be enthused about the high quality programmes they offer. Our feedback from participants and facilitators is showing great impact in schools, and our measurement of this is influenced by Guskey's proposals for effective evaluation of professional development. You can find out more about that here Professional-Learning-1-Gauge-Impact-with-Five-Levels-of-Data.pdf (tguskey.com)

We hope that working in collaboration with Shires will enable the TSH offer to be more localised as we are able to base our NPQs at schools which may be closer to colleagues in Worcestershire and Warwickshire. In addition to this, we hope that with more colleagues in Warwickshire and Worcestershire facilitating these qualifications, the discussions and examples used within programmes will ensure a great offer for participants, with a strong appreciation of local context and enriched networking.

 Initial Teacher Training: Steve Dixon

As always, as we begin picking up the pace of all our workstreams at this time of year the summer holiday seems a long time ago!

In ITT, you may have heard reference to ‘Recommendation 10’. This relates to the strands of crucial work to be undertaken by all Teaching School Hubs as we look to meet the long-term needs of the profession. In addressing the first strand of ‘Recommendation 10’, we are excited to have continued our primary delivery of ITT as a partner for Teach First in their pilot school-centred training programme. This means we are already meeting the higher bar for the quality standards which will be expected across the sector from September 2024. Our joint expertise also means that our new cohort of trainees are already benefitting from the resources and structures of a national provider, whilst receiving high quality training, care and support from local expert colleagues. All trainees have now started in their core placement schools and are excited to begin making a difference to the children they will be teaching.

The second strand of ‘Recommendation 10’ relates to the role of Teaching School Hubs in building capacity to support ITT in their respective regions. We are delighted to have added the experience and expertise of Helen Dunnico to our team. Helen has shared a little of her background below, and has already made great strides in gathering a really precise and accurate profile of the engagement of schools with ITT in our region – and the complications that can go with this. If you haven’t spoken with Helen yet, she may be in touch with you soon!

Recruitment for trainees for 2024-2025 opens at the beginning of October – we will have a range of information events to share with you in future newsletters. In the meantime, if you would like to find out more about our work, or have any questions about ITT, you can contact us using this link.

 Head Teacher Advocate: Helen Dunnico

I joined the team at Tudor Grange Teaching School Hub in September after gaining 34 years experience in education, working as a class teacher, senior leader and for the last 15 years as a Head Teacher.  I have spent the majority of my career in Birmingham Schools before moving to take up a second headship in Warwickshire in 2017.  During my time as both a teacher and leader I have been driven by the desire to ensure that children receive an excellent education, leading to good outcomes for all.

My official job title here at the Teaching School Hub is Head Teacher Advocate. My role focuses on Initial Teacher Training, with the aim of supporting schools in the Hub region to engage with ITT, so that the next generation of teachers have purposeful, positive experiences to start their careers.  Having worked with many students during my time in schools, both as a teacher and a leader, I recognise the importance and benefits of working with trainees, but I also understand that there are challenges, and that commitment is required.

I have already started contacting schools in the Hub region to gain a picture of the current provision and would like to thank those Head Teachers I have spoken to for their time.  I will be contacting all schools within the next few months.

There are some significant changes taking place within ITT.   I hope to have the opportunity to speak to many of you in the coming months to share the structure of ITT provision ensuring that you can make informed decisions about your engagement.  As a former Head Teacher, I appreciate the pressures and demands on resources, and I am looking forward to working collaboratively with you all to support the next generation of teachers.
