Head Teacher Advocate: Helen Dunnico
I spent the Autumn Term making an initial contact with all schools in the Tudor Grange Hub Region to find out how schools are engaging in Initial Teacher Training. The response rate has been just under 75% and it has been interesting and informative speaking to so many of you. Many schools spoke very positively about the benefits of working with trainees, even though they also faced challenges, some of which included, capacity to effectively mentor, managing staff turnover, supporting ECTs and being in the Ofsted window!
I have now gained a good picture of ITT engagement in the Hub region and am looking forward to working with you all to support and encourage schools to work with trainees in the near future.
There are some significant changes to ITT which are due to be implemented in September 2024, and this term, I am meeting with Head Teachers and senior leaders through online and face-to-face sessions to deliver the key messages. This is intended to provide useful information about the differing ways schools can support trainees and give them time to prepare for this. This is particularly relevant to mentoring which we know is a significant commitment for schools.
There are still some ‘unknowns’, particularly with regards to funding for mentor release beyond next academic year and how compatible mentor training will be across the different ITT providers and between ITT and ECT. There is work being undertaken by Teaching Schools and ITT providers in the West Midlands to ensure this is more manageable for schools. We hope to be able to share more information about this soon. It is evident; however, from the conversations I have had with schools that the vast majority are willing and keen to support the next generation of teachers and to give them the grounding they will need to keep them in the profession.
We will be developing the ITT section of the Teaching School Hub website in the coming weeks, so that we can provide a range of information for schools to access easily. We hope you will find this useful.
