Early Career Framework: Emily Stallard

The Spring term has been busy for Early Career Framework. We are pleased that we have co-ordinated 22 events in total, reaching hundreds of ECTs and Mentors. Thank you to everyone for their involvement and engagement in these events. I am very grateful to work with such a network of schools and talented facilitators who make the events so successful.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel one event due to illness, but this will be rescheduled as soon as we are able.

I am currently working on plans for summer events and will aim to publish these early after half-term to allow schools and participants to make plans to attend. I am also delighted to announce we will be hosting a facilitator event in the summer term where we hope to bring all expertise together to celebrate, share and develop our skills further. More details to follow!

Finally, a huge congratulations to our April 2022 ECTs and Mentors who are coming to the end of their 2-year programme. Thank you for your participation and enthusiasm and we wish you all the best for your future careers.

Emily

 Initial Teacher Training: Steve Dixon

It is hard to believe that the Christmas break only ended a few weeks ago, as so much has happened since we came back for the new year! Our current cohort of trainees have completed a successful intensive training and practice period with a focus on questioning. This has been based on the model that will be included in all ITT provision from September 2024, and has given us a real insight into the benefits of the depth of learning that arises from this approach. If any school is considering how they could be involved in intensive training and practice in the future, or would just like more information about this model, please contact us.
Following on from this, our trainees have been undertaking their broader school experiences. It has been fantastic to hear their enthusiastic reflections as they have worked in contrasting schools, with different age ranges, and with providers of specialist education. We are so lucky to have so many different schools and experts willing to offer these experiences in our region. Again, if this is something you would like to find out more about or become involved with, we would love to hear from you.
You may have heard that the DfE have released the initial teacher training and early career framework (ITTECF). This aims to provide even greater coherence to the professional development of teachers across the crucial first years of their career. You can see the rationale and details of this new document here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/initial-teacher-training-and-early-career-framework

This article provides a summary of the changes:

We are sure there will be other articles about this coming out over the coming months - watch this space!
Recruitment for 2024-25 has also continued to be busy, with a steady flow of applications and interviews. Keep an eye out through the usual channels for any events that may be of interest to your family, friends and colleagues. In the meantime, for any general enquiries about teacher training, please contact us using this link: https://forms.office.com/e/2g0icdHgmj

 Head Teacher Advocate: Helen Dunnico

I spent the Autumn Term making an initial contact with all schools in the Tudor Grange Hub Region to find out how schools are engaging in Initial Teacher Training. The response rate has been just under 75% and it has been interesting and informative speaking to so many of you. Many schools spoke very positively about the benefits of working with trainees, even though they also faced challenges, some of which included, capacity to effectively mentor, managing staff turnover, supporting ECTs and being in the Ofsted window!

I have now gained a good picture of ITT engagement in the Hub region and am looking forward to working with you all to support and encourage schools to work with trainees in the near future.

There are some significant changes to ITT which are due to be implemented in September 2024, and this term, I am meeting with Head Teachers and senior leaders through online and face-to-face sessions to deliver the key messages. This is intended to provide useful information about the differing ways schools can support trainees and give them time to prepare for this. This is particularly relevant to mentoring which we know is a significant commitment for schools.

There are still some ‘unknowns’, particularly with regards to funding for mentor release beyond next academic year and how compatible mentor training will be across the different ITT providers and between ITT and ECT. There is work being undertaken by Teaching Schools and ITT providers in the West Midlands to ensure this is more manageable for schools. We hope to be able to share more information about this soon. It is evident; however, from the conversations I have had with schools that the vast majority are willing and keen to support the next generation of teachers and to give them the grounding they will need to keep them in the profession.

We will be developing the ITT section of the Teaching School Hub website in the coming weeks, so that we can provide a range of information for schools to access easily. We hope you will find this useful.

Helen
